ROUNDUP : Windmiller, Calcante Lead Northridge Win

Amy Windmiller pitched a two-hitter and Beth Calcante had her 23rd run batted in, a team high, as Cal State Northridge defeated Texas A&M;, 1-0, in pool play of the Cal State Fullerton PONY softball tournament on Thursday.

Windmiller (10-2), a junior transfer from Sacramento City College, struck out nine and walked none.

Northridge (21-3-1), the No. 7-ranked team in the nation, will play top-ranked Arizona in a pool play game at 1 p.m. today.

The Matadors scored in the first inning when Terri Pearson singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jen Fleming and scored on Calcante’s single.

Texas A&M; (18-11) had runners on second and third with one out in the fourth and sixth innings, but Windmiller worked her way out of both jams.

In the fourth, she enticed Jenifer Wells to pop up and struck out Stacy Segal to end the inning.

In the sixth, Wells grounded to third--as the runners held--for the second out and Segal popped up to end the inning.

Pearson had two hits for Northridge, which is 5-0-1 since losing the first game of a doubleheader to DePaul on Saturday.

*COLLEGE BASEBALL

Valley 12, Bakersfield 3--Freshmen Vic Seper and Jamie Zeichick each had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Monarchs (12-10, 11-5 in conference play) to their fifth consecutive Western State Conference victory in a constant drizzle at Bakersfield.

Zeichick hit a three-run home run in the third to give Valley a 5-1 lead. Arnold Settles added a solo home run in the fifth to extend the Monarchs’ lead to 10-1.

Sophomore right-hander Willie Rivera went the distance for Valley, scattering nine hits, striking out five and walking none.

*HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Campbell Hall 12, Pilgrim 2--Danny Strick (3-0) scattered six hits, and C.J. Thompkins had two hits and scored three runs as the Vikings (3-4) won a nonleague game that was called after five innings because of darkness.

*BOYS’ GOLF

Notre Dame 227, Harvard-Westlake 232--The Knights won the Mission League golf match at Lakeside Country Club behind senior Kyle Kovacs, who finished at five-over-par 40 for nine holes. Harvard-Westlake junior Eric Shortz also shot 40 to capture co-medalist honors. Notre Dame improved to 4-5, 2-2.

*HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING

Victories in the 400-yard freestyle relays--the final events--gave Chaminade’s boys and girls Mission League victories. The boys beat St. John Bosco, 87-81, with Joh Clarke winning the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

His sister, Lee Clarke, won the 100 freestyle and swam on the 400 relay as the girls beat St. Joseph, 88-82.
