PREP ROUNDUP : Santa Ana Finally Defeats Tough Marina in Volleyball

Santa Ana won its third consecutive breakthrough match, defeating Marina, 11-15, 15-13, 15-6, 9-15, 15-13, in Sunset League boys’ volleyball Wednesday at Santa Ana.

The Saints had not beaten Marina since joining the Sunset League five seasons ago. Last week they beat Fountain Valley and Edison for the first time since being placed in the league.

John Boyd had 30 kills, Carlos Bolanos had 25 and Victor Sanchez had 17 for Santa Ana (7-1, 4-1). Setter Vlade Diaz had nine stuff blocks for the Saints.

In other Sunset League volleyball:

Huntington Beach 3, Ocean View 0--Nick Zeigler had 14 kills for host Huntington Beach (7-0, 5-0). Brian Grace had 15 kills for Ocean View (4-4, 2-3).

Fountain Valley 3, Edison 1--Joon Kang had 29 kills in Fountain Valley’s 15-10, 16-14, 14-16, 15-4 victory. Teammate Morgan Lutes, who returned from a knee injury, added 15 kills for the Barons (6-1, 4-1).

In Sea View League golf:

Corona del Mar 198, University 203--Freshman Billy Sarracino of Corona del Mar and Bret Skinner of University each shot one-over 37 at Rancho San Joaquin. University is 4-5, 2-3; Corona del Mar is 5-1 in league.

In Sunset League girls’ track and field:

Edison 92 1/2, Marina 34 1/2--Freshman Kelly Marshall won the 200 (26.7) and the 400 (1:01.3) and ran legs on the winning 400- and 1,600-relay teams and freshman Marie Philman won four events for Edison (4-0). Philman won in the 100 hurdles (16.3), the high jump (4-8), the shot put (33-8) and the discus (118-6). Tomoko Nishioka won the long jump (16-10) and the triple jump (35-3 3/4) for host Marina (2-2).

In Sunset League boys’ track and field:

Marina 100, Edison 36--Tony Parrish had victories in the 100 (11.5), the long jump (20-11) and the triple jump (44-8) for Marina (4-0).

In Sea View League softball:

Irvine 9, Saddleback 1--Alleah Poulson hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning for host Irvine (11-2, 3-0).

Tustin 3, Newport Harbor 0--Jenny Lopez pitched a no-hitter for Tustin (6-6, 2-1). Lopez struck out seven and walked one. Newport Harbor fell to 7-3 and 1-2.

Woodbridge 7, University 0--Debbie Nasitka had two hits, including a double, and drove in four runs for host Woodbridge (8-4, 2-1). Alison Johnsen stole her 19th base of the season for the Warriors.

In Sunset League softball:

Fountain Valley 3, Ocean View 0--Danny Rodriguez held Ocean View to three hits for Fountain Valley (10-3, 3-0). Alicia Burdick hit a triple in the fourth inning for Fountain Valley. Ocean View is 10-4, 2-1.

In nonleague softball:

Los Alamitos 5, La Quinta 0--Debbie Wilson pitched a one-hitter and Michelle Schneider went two for three with two RBIs for Las Alamitos (12-1).
