SIMI VALLEY : Workshop to Focus on Yard Composting
Simi Valley residents can help reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills by composting yard waste, the subject of a free city-sponsored workshop Saturday.
Yard waste represents the largest single segment of the city’s waste, said Joe Hreha, deputy director in the city’s Environmental Services Department.
But instead of throwing it away, residents can stack it in the yard and apply water to quicken decomposition, said Cathy Ilg, a management analyst for the city. The end product then can serve a useful purpose, she said.
“This soil is used just like potting soil, mulch and ground cover,” Ilg said.
Done properly, composting takes up little space, causes no odor and requires extra work only if the resident wants decomposition to occur quickly, Ilg said.
Workshop participants are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chair to the session, which will be held 10 a.m. to noon at Rancho Tapo Community Park.
