Rob Webb has been named to replace Kurt Keller as basketball coach at Alemany High.
Webb, a teacher at Alemany, was an assistant coach at the school from 1988-90 under Rocky Moore. When Moore moved from Alemany to Muir, Webb went to Glendale College, where he assisted with the men’s team for two seasons. He rejoined Moore as an assistant at Muir before the past season.
Webb, 24, also assisted with the Glendale College women’s team under Moore in the 1987-88 season. Webb graduated from Cal State Northridge last June with a degree in marketing and communications.
“My initial idea was to jump in the advertising field but our economy prohibited that,” Webb said.
Webb, who teaches economics, math and history, was a student-teacher during the first semester at Alemany and was added to the full-time staff at the semester break.
Alemany Athletic Director Dudley Rooney said the decision to replace Keller was “a mutual thing” between Keller and Father Robert Milbauer, Alemany’s principal.
The Indians were 7-17 this season and finished fifth in the Mission League with a 3-11 record. In his three years, Keller was 33-46.
Webb, who said discipline and conditioning are his coaching strengths, welcomed the opportunity to build a program at Alemany.
“I think we’re going to have a good, hard-working bunch of kids,” Webb said. “Alemany has a reputation as a girls’ basketball school, which is outstanding, but we want to turn that over to the other side of the gym.”
