Crucial Series Awaits Toro Baseball Team

The Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal Poly Pomona baseball teams will play for the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. lead when they begin a three-game series.

The teams play at 2:30 p.m. today at Pomona and travel to Carson for a doubleheader at noon Saturday. Both teams are 7-4 in the conference.

Dominguez Hills (20-11) moved into a tie with Pomona on Tuesday by defeating Cal State Los Angeles, 3-2.

First baseman Greg Bergeron leads the Toros in batting with a .424 average. Outfielder Corey Woinarowicz, who had a 22-game hitting streak stopped last week, is batting .350.

Sophomore pitcher Scott Veeder has a 4-3 record and 1.69 earned-run average.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s softball team, which has won 10 of 11 games, will play host to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a CCAA doubleheader at noon Sunday in Carson.

The teams split a doubleheader earlier this season.

Dominguez Hills (14-9-1, 5-5) has been led by senior infielder Melissa Punch, who is batting .479. Punch’s 13-game hitting streak, 10th longest in NCAA Division II history, ended in the first game of a doubleheader with Chapman on Wednesday.

Toro pitcher Cindy Hover is 7-4.

The Loyola Marymount men’s golf team will compete in the West Coast Conference championships Monday and Tuesday at Boundary Oaks Golf Course in Walnut Creek, Calif.

The Lions, who finished fourth in the conference meet last season, are led by senior John Chung, freshman Dan Donovan and junior Brian Pytlewski.

Pepperdine, which has won the past two titles, is the favorite.

Rudy (The Beauty) Zavala defends his United States Boxing Assn. junior featherweight title against Max Gomez in a bout scheduled for 12 rounds Monday night at the Forum.

Zavala, of Costa Mesa, is 21-1-1 with 17 knockouts. Gomez, of Denver, is 12-3 with eight knockouts.

Among the undercard bouts will be Stephan Johnson (21-4-1, 14 KOs) of Brooklyn, N.Y., meeting Darryl Lattimore (20-8, nine KOs) of Washington in a first-round bout of the Budweiser welterweight tournament.

The card begins at 7:30.

Television stars such as Justine Bateman and Ted McGinley are expected compete alongside beach volleyball professionals in the For Peace Sake! tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at Santa Monica State Beach.

Among the pro players expected to compete will be Karolyn Kirby, Linda Chisholm-Carrillo, Angela Rock, Jon Stevenson and Gary Sato.

Proceeds from the tournament will go toward the Daniel Freeman Hospitals Foundation and the Emergency Relief Fund.

Tickets for the beach party are $35 and corporate sponsorships for the tournament are $1,000.

The Harbor College football program will sponsor its third annual golf tournament at 11 a.m. April 19 at Los Verdes Country Club in Rancho Palos Verdes.

The cost is $80, including green fees, cart rental and a steak dinner. Proceeds will benefit the Harbor football program.

Tournament organizers also need team, tee and green sponsors.

South Bay Youth Basketball is conducting registration for summer leagues for boys and girls 5 to 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and April 10 in Manhattan Beach.

The Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring its Beach Over-the-Line Softball tournament from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 24 in Manhattan Beach.

The three-on-three tournament will offer men’s open and novice, women’s and co-ed divisions.

The cost is $40 a team.

Many of the top prep basketball players from Southern California are expected to compete in the ITZ Blue Chip Basketball Shootout on April 9, 10, 17 and 18 at Cerritos College in Norwalk.
