Loyola Opens Series With Santa Clara
The Loyola Marymount baseball team will try to stay in contention for the West Coast Conference title when it plays host to Santa Clara for a three-game series starting today.
The teams are scheduled to play a single game at 2:30 p.m. today and a doubleheader at noon Saturday.
Loyola is 14-18 and in third place in the WCC at 7-5, 3 1/2 games behind first place San Diego. Santa Clara (15-14-1) is in fourth place in the conference at 5-7.
Loyola, which lost two of three games at San Diego last week, is hoping to benefit from playing nine of its next 10 games at home.
The Lion pitching staff, which has a 2.63 earned-run average in conference games, is led by freshman Ryan Graves, who is 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA, and sophomore Shawn Hammett, who is 6-4 with a 3.75 ERA.
The team has struggled offensively with a .259 batting average.
