COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nevada Beats Titans in Baseball to Bring Two Streaks to an End

Cal State Fullerton’s 14-game winning streak and sophomore Dante Powell’s 18-game hitting streak ended Sunday.

Nevada beat the Titans, 11-1, in a Big West Conference game at Reno in which Powell was hitless in four at-bats.

It was the first conference loss for first-place Fullerton (22-8, 11-1), which is ranked fourth in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.

The Titans had taken the opening game in the series, 10-1, Friday, then won Saturday, 16-4.

But Sunday, Nevada (18-7-1, 1-2) scored four runs in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth to open an 8-0 lead. Starter Derek Fahs (3-2) took the loss as Nevada had 13 hits against three Fullerton pitchers.

Bret Hemphill and Jim Betzsold each had doubles for Fullerton, which was held to a season-low five hits.

The Titans hit eight home runs in the first two games of the series but had none Sunday.

Fullerton travels to Pepperdine Tuesday for a 2:30 p.m. nonconference game. The teams played for the national title in June with the Waves winning, 3-2.

In the championship match of the UC Irvine/Marriott Tennis Classic:

Alabama Birmingham 6, UC Irvine 1--Alabama Birmingham, ranked No. 7 in the country, won five of six singles matches in defending its title.

Carlos Bustos was the only winner for UC Irvine. He won, 7-6, 7-6, at No. 4 singles.
