Greg Maddux pitched another great game at Wrigley Field. Only this time it was against the Chicago Cubs.

Maddux began the Atlanta Braves’ bid for a third consecutive National League championship by combining with Mike Stanton for a five-hitter, beating the Cubs, 1-0, Monday.

Maddux, who left the Cubs as a free agent last winter after winning the Cy Young Award with a 20-11 record, beat Mike Morgan, one of his closest friends.

Maddux gave up five hits in 8 1/3 innings and left the game with runners on first and second. Stanton got the last two outs.

“No vindication,” said Maddux, who was booed loudly.

“It was motivating,” he said of the reception he received. “It was fun and I don’t blame them, not really.”

Maddux drew the biggest jeers when his name was announced for his first at-bat. He also drew the loudest cheers when he struck out during the fourth with the bases loaded.

Philadelphia 3, Houston 1--Terry Mulholland pitched a four-hitter and Doug Drabek lost his Houston debut as the Phillies beat the Astros at Houston.

Mulholland walked one and struck out three in defeating Drabek, the 1990 NL Cy Young Award winner who was making his first start for the Astros after six seasons with Pittsburgh.

Drabek gave up only four hits in eight innings. But he gave up two runs during the fourth inning on an RBI double by Darren Daulton and a run-scoring single by Jim Eisenreich.
