PREP ROUNDUP : Los Alamitos Is a Winner in Las Vegas

Los Alamitos’ No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 hitters--Caleb Kemp, Collin Burke and Cory Barnett--went 12 for 14 with nine RBIs as the Griffins beat Taft, 16-7, in a pool-play game Tuesday at the Las Vegas Eldorado tournament.

Kemp had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs. Burke had five hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Barnett had three hits and three RBIs for Los Alamitos (7-7-1).

In other Las Vegas Eldorado tournament games:

Fountain Valley 7, Las Vegas Eldorado 1--Brian Ponchak pitched a two-hitter, striking out 10 and walking three for Fountain Valley (11-4). Dan Hoppe had three hits including a double, and three RBIs for the Barons.

In another tournament game, Ponchak hit a grand slam in the fifth to lead the Barons to an 8-0 victory against Poway. Geoff Wilson had three hits and two RBIs and Ara Petrosian pitched five innings.

Tustin 10, Fresno Bullard 2--Mando Fonseca was three for four with two runs scored for Tustin in the upset of Bullard, ranked fourth in the nation by USA Today. Tim Wilson was three for four with three RBIs and three runs scored and teammate Derek Baker had two RBIs for the Tillers (9-5-1), who will play Mira Mesa today. Tustin iced its victory when Ronnie Hall hit a three-run triple in the sixth inning.

Edison 9, Tucson (Ariz.) Sabino 1--Todd Belitz pitched five innings with eight strikeouts and three walks for Edison (8-3).

In the quarterfinals of the Coachella Valley tournament:

Capistrano Valley 11, Brawley 0 (five innings, mercy rule)--Senior Cole Flynn pitched a two-hitter, striking out four and walking three, for the Cougars (9-3) at the College of the Desert. Senior Brian Benner hit his first home run of the season in the first inning with one on. Peter Zamora went three for four with two RBIs, and Scott Shone had a pair of singles and three stolen bases. Capistrano Valley plays its quarterfinal game today at 10 a.m., with the winner advancing to the championship game today at 2:30.

In the Pomona Elks tournament:

Ocean View 7, Baldwin Park 1--In his first appearance of the season, junior Brad Churchill earned the victory, pitching a complete game four-hitter for Ocean View (12-4). The Seahawks advanced to the consolation championship game, where they will play Covina.

Earlier Tuesday: Steve Rivera had two triples and three RBIs, and Pat Gildea pitched five innings of relief to earn the win as Ocean View downed Walnut, 12-4.

In Don Lugo tournament:

Westminster 5, Phelan Serrano 2--Jason Fabisk hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, giving Westminster a 3-2 lead. Mike Boucher had two RBIs for Westminster (10-4).

At the Desert Classic golf tournament in Las Vegas:

Fountain Valley wins--The Barons’ Steve Yun took fourth place with a two-round total of 171, finishing nine shots behind medalist Steve Nelson of Las Vegas Cimmaron.

Yun shot a six-over 78, the low round of the tournament, in the second round Tuesday at Painted Desert Golf Club. Ben Turner tied for fifth for Fountain Valley, shooting a first-round-low 79.

In a nonleague softball game:

Mater Dei 2, Lakewood St. Joseph’s 1--Jennifer Clark (5-1) pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts. Candice Kollen had an RBI double and later scored on a fielder’s choice in the third for Mater Dei (10-2).
