1993 PREP BASKETBALL / Los Angeles Times ALL-STARS : Girls’ Team Has Balance; Boys’ Squad Gets to the Point : Boys: Southern Section champion Muir had a leader, national talent in guard Vaughn.

The national spotlight was turned toward the San Gabriel Valley this season as high school basketball fanatics tracked the progress of Muir point guard Jacque Vaughn.

Vaughn, a senior who will attend Kansas in the fall, helped the Mustangs win a Southern Section championship with a flair that ranks him as one of the best players to ever come out of the area.

Vaughn joins nine other players who have been chosen to The Times 1993 San Gabriel Valley all-star team. The players were drawn from more than 50 high schools from Alhambra to Pomona. The players were selected based on ballots received from area coaches, all of whom were asked to participate.

Players selected to the first team will be honored at a breakfast April 18 at the Pasadena Hilton. The area player and coach of the year will also be announced at the breakfast.

Here is a player-by-player look at the team:

Matt Campbell, Arcadia--Campbell, a 6-foot-6 senior, averaged 21 points a game for the Apaches, who competed in the Pacific League along with Southern Section champion Muir, powerful Pasadena, and Division II semifinalist Crescenta Valley.

Donald Guyton, Pasadena--The Bulldogs have produced many exceptional guards over the years, including Michael Cooper and Michael Holton.

Guyton, a 6-2 junior, gave a season-long performance worthy of that tradition, averaging 18 points a game.

Damien Jones, Wilson--Jones, a 6-3 senior guard, was one of the finest all-around backcourt players in the area. He averaged 24 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Victor Lesley, Damien--Lesley, a 6-4 junior forward, was the Baseline League’s most valuable player, averaging 20.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and there assists.

Jameel Mahmud, West Covina--Mahmud, a 5-11 senior, is a repeat selection to the all-star team. He averaged 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and five assists.

Damien Morbley, Pomona--The Devils won the Montview League title behind the play of Morbley, who averaged 22 points a game and was selected as the league’s most valuable player.

Cameron Murray, Glendora--Murray, the area player of the year last season, averaged 27.7 points a game for the Tartans. The 6-0 junior figures to make it three consecutive appearances on the all-star team next year.

Keith Van Horn, Diamond Bar--Van Horn, a 6-8 senior, averaged 29.2 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.7 blocks for the Pathfinders.

Jacque Vaughn, Muir--Vaughn, the Southern Section’s all-time assist leader, was the recipient of the Dial Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top high school athlete in recognition of athletic and academic excellence.

Jeremy Veal, San Dimas--Veal, a 6-3 junior, combined with senior Brad Alley to give San Dimas a formidable backcourt combination.

Veal averaged 22.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and four assists for San Dimas.
