Irvine University 6, Crescenta Valley 5 (8 innings)--A wild pitch by Falcon pitcher Brian Feather with two out in the bottom of the eighth allowed University to score the winning run in the third-place game.

Casey Canale was two for three with two runs batted in for the Falcons (8-5). Brendon Cowsill and Jesse Mitchell both had two hits and an RBI. Eric Cadena (0-1) took the loss.

Saugus 6, Alemany 2--Right-hander Bobby Cowan (2-4) faced one batter over the minimum in the final six innings as Saugus (10-6) won the fifth-place game.

Cowan allowed two runs in the first (one earned) and finished with a two-hitter.

Burroughs 6, Hoover 4--Juan Fernandez and Luis Alaya each drew a bases-loaded walk in Burroughs’ three-run first inning in the consolation championship. Holland Cowger (4-1) earned the win for Burroughs (6-8).

Mike Bertran was two for three and had two RBIs for Hoover (9-4), which allowed four unearned runs. David Martinez (1-1) took the loss.

In other games:

Thousand Oaks 8, Hart 7--Clint Harris, the Lancers’ designated hitter, hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth to give Thousand Oaks the lead, 8-6, and the Lancers held on for the Kiwanis tournament championship at Thousand Oaks (10-6).

Peter Lauer (2-0) earned the win after relieving Brian Downing in the third inning. Downing returned to relieve Lauer in the sixth and notched the save.

Hueneme 7, Oxnard 6--Charles Barry doubled with two out in the top of the seventh to drive in Scott Kane from second with the winning run in a Channel League game at Oxnard. Hueneme (4-6, 2-3 in league play) trailed, 6-0, after three innings, but scored two runs in the fourth and four in the sixth to tie the score.

Jess Olivares (1-2) pitched the final two innings to earn the win.

Royal 9, Agoura 8--Highlander second baseman Donald Martinez singled to drive in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, then scored the winning run on a passed ball later in the inning in a Marmonte League game at Royal (8-3, 4-1).

David Vicari (3-1) earned the win and Highlander Joel Mellenger was two for three with two RBIs.

Montclair Prep 13, Julian Union 8--The Mounties (12-2) won all four of their games in the 32-team Sundevil Spring tournament in Las Vegas after banging out 10 doubles as part of a 19-hit attack. Ethan Parker, Chris Ferebee, Jeff Shapiro and Alan Hecht each had two doubles, and eight starters had multiple-hit games.

Ventura 3, Santa Barbara 2--Monty Moritz pitched a four-hitter and had the game-winning RBI for Ventura in the fifth-place game of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Moritz (4-3), a sophomore, struck out seven, walked four and hit three batters. His two-out single in the fifth drove in Jerry Carpenter from second and gave the Cougars (8-7) a 3-1 lead.

Quartz Hill 4, Moorpark 3--Musketeer starter Richard Hernandez pitched four innings of no-hit ball before reaching his innings-per-week limit in the Thousand Oaks tournament. Quartz Hill erupted for all of its runs on five hits off reliever Brian Garrettson in the bottom of the seventh to win. Garrettson had two hits, an RBI and a double.

Santa Maria St. Joseph 4, Littlerock 2--Lobo pitcher Toine Jager threw a two-hit complete game but was undone by Littlerock’s defense, which committed seven errors in a Santa Barbara County North tournament consolation game in Santa Maria. Littlerock is 5-7.

Brentwood 12, Providence 0--Pitcher Cedric Smith (2-0) retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced before Steve Marz got the final three outs of a combined one-hitter in a nonleague game. Smith and Marz got all the offense they needed from David Corleto, who drove in five runs and hit a grand slam in the second inning.

St. Genevieve 8, Bell-Jeff 3--Valiant shortstop Jeremy Iaccino improved his average to .536 by going three for four in a Camino Real League game at St. Genevieve (2-6, 1-1). Tomas Oliva (2-1) earned the win.

SOFTBALL

Hoover 6, Oceanside El Camino 1--Nancy Evans (14-0-1) pitched a three-hitter and struck out 16 for Hoover in the championship game of the Orange Glen tournament at Kit Carson Park in Escondido.

Evans, who will attend Arizona in the fall, added three hits and an RBI for the Tornadoes (14-0-1).

Teammates Tracy Christiansen (two runs, one RBI) and Brenda Lyon (one run, one RBI) each had two hits.

Agoura 7, Channel Islands 4--Charger junior Megan Kenny threw her second consecutive no-hitter, but Channel Islands managed to score four runs in the Marmonte League game as Agoura (3-8, 2-3) committed seven errors at Channel Islands.

Agoura’s Rachel Clark was for four with four RBIs and Elyse Frank was two for two and scored three runs.

Fillmore 9, Santa Clara 2--Second baseman Christy Fauver went three for four and had two RBIs for the Flashes (10-1) in a non-league game at Fillmore. Junior Niki Calderon (2-0) earned the win, striking out seven and allowing four hits.

Sylmar 6, El Camino Real 4--Traci Hanna was three for three with three RBIs as pitcher Nikki Wright improved to 8-4.

Alemany 3, Bishop Montgomery 0--Tami Alcantar doubled and drove home two runs for the Indians. Pitcher Sophie Contreraz (13-0) recorded her 12th shutout, striking out seven and allowing two hits. Alemany is 13-2, 5-0 in the Mission League.

La Reina 10, Bishop Diego 0--Michelle Nuesca was three for four with two RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases for host La Reina in the Tri-Valley League game.

The win was the ninth in a row for La Reina (10-2, 3-0).

Notre Dame 4, St. Bernard 1--Sharon Marciniak had a double, a triple and an RBI and Michele Lucente was three for four and drove in a run as Notre Dame improved to 5-9, 3-2 in the Mission League. Krista Corpening scattered seven hits, struck out seven and improved to 4-6.

Granada Hills 13, Chatsworth 3--Brandi Brennan notched the win and went two for four with three RBIs for visiting Granada Hills (6-1, 1-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

BOYS’ TRACK

Birmingham 116, Poly 11--James Lincoln won four events in the Valley Pac-8 Conference meet to lead host Birmingham to its 47th consecutive victory.

Lincoln, the defending City Section champion in the high jump, won his specialty at 6-3, and he also placed first in the 110 high hurdles (15.4), long jump (personal best 21-2 1/2) and triple jump (41-6).

Tony Serpas won the 100 (10.7) and 400 (50.8) for Birmingham (4-0, 4-0), the defending City champion.

Notre Dame 93, St. Bernard 34--Frank Vega, Kurt Wolff and Carlos Peruyera led host Notre Dame (5-0, 5-0) in the Mission League meet.

Vega won the 200 with a personal best of 22.2, Peruyera took the 400 in 50.9, and Wolff won the long jump with a personal best of 21-6 and finished second in the 100 (10.8).

Monroe 105, Sylmar 31--Jeff Nadeau of host Monroe was a triple winner in the Valley Pac-8 Conference meet.

Nadeau, a senior, equaled his season bests in the high jump (6-6) and the triple jump (42-9 1/2), and he spanned a season best of 21-6 in the long jump.

Teammate Jaberra Henry won the shotput with a season best of 48-10 1/2.

North Hollywood 72, Van Nuys 54--Anson Credille won the long jump and the triple jump for visiting North Hollywood in the Valley Pac-8 Conference meet.

Credille spanned 20-9 in the long jump and bounded a personal best of 44-8 in the triple jump.
