Four-Year Schools Harvest Football Talent From Harbor, Southwest

Sixteen Harbor College and 13 Southwest players have signed letters of intent to continue their football careers at four-year schools.

Harbor players who have signed letters include defensive lineman Brandon Johnson (6-3, 260, Banning High), who will attend Memphis State; offensive lineman Jared Tuione (6-5, 290, Hawthorne High), Brigham Young University; tight end Anthony Griffin (6-3, 220), San Jose State; running back Erick Williams (5-10, 200, Banning High), Ohio University; running back Richard Gilfore (5-10, 235, Narbonne High); offensive lineman Jose Romero (6-1, 235, Torrance), Cal State Northridge; defensive lineman Reginal Taylor (6-2, 230, Carson High), Weber State; defensive lineman Myoung Kim (6-2, 230, Narbonne High), UC San Diego; linebacker Robert Lyttle (6-1, 235, West Torrance High), Murray State and defensive back Craig Weems (5-10, 178, Mira Costa High), San Diego State.

Weems is the son of Harbor Coach Don Weems.

Other Seahawk players who will continue their careers include running back Damon Moore (6-0, 235), Eastern New Mexico; offensive lineman David Vida (6-2, 250), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; linebacker Tory Cain (6-0, 200, Carson High), Southern Illinois; running back Kenneth Williams (5-9, 200, Banning High) and defensive back Mateo Urruita (6-2, 205, Mira Costa), Sonoma State.

Offensive lineman Thomas Alalima (6-2, 246) will attend Division III Occidental College and running back Ira Moreland (5-8, 195, Hawthorne High) plans to attend the University of Washington as a walk-on.

Southwest running back Takim Brown (6-0, 250), the Cougars’ leading rusher with 739 yards in 146 carries, and defensive back Darnell Hendricks (6-3, 200) signed with Division I-AA Southern Illinois.

Southwest’s other signees are linebacker Hausia Fuahala (6-4, 220), Iowa; defensive back Quan Banks (6-0, 185), Nevada; defensive back Donovan Johnson (6-3, 190), Western Missouri; defensive back Robert Avery (6-4, 195); linebacker Terry Dupree (6-1, 220); Western New Mexico, linebacker Jeremy Adams (5-11, 200); Humboldt State; defensive lineman Shawn Holmes (6-4, 240) and offensive lineman Preston Curtis (6-5, 275), Sonoma State; defensive lineman Tim Gardner (6-3, 230) and offensive lineman Khary Wilder (6-4, 320), Northridge and defensive lineman Anthony Haddrick (6-3, 220), Morehouse College.

El Camino College basketball player Mark Johnson has narrowed his choices to Arizona State, Northern Arizona and Clemson.

The 6-foot-3 forward led the Warriors in scoring with 22 points a game and was named to the All-South Coast Conference second team.

Harbor forward Bassirou Niang and guard Frank White will play in the Division II California Collegiate Athletic Assn. next year. Niang will attend Cal State Dominguez Hills and White will enroll at Cal State San Bernardino.

The 6-foot-7 Niang, who completed high school in Paris, averaged 20 points and 9.5 rebounds last season.

Dominguez Hills also signed guard Carlos Paul and swingman Corwyn Lewis, who were teammates at Porterville Community College last season.

The 6-1 Paul averaged 17.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season. He was a first-team All-Coast Valley Conference selection.

The 6-3 Lewis averaged 16 points and 7.2 rebounds and was also named to the All-Coast Valley first team.

The Toros are expecting to sign 6-0 guard Kevin Swindler of Gardena High and 6-8 center Alex Del Hierro of Pasadena City College.

Del Hierro originally signed with Dominguez Hills in 1990, but wound up playing for Pasadena the past two seasons.
