Share

Athletic teams from Calvary Chapel, Los Alamitos, Santiago and Woodbridge high schools will be among those in 23 sports honored with Southern Section academic awards presented April 21 at Anaheim Stadium, before the game between the Angels and Cleveland Indians.

To be considered for the awards, which recognize outstanding classroom achievement by teams and individual student athletes, teams must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average in college-prep courses for the first semester of the 1992-93 school year. The highest team GPA in each sport determines the champions.

The girls’ tennis team from Los Alamitos had the highest GPA of all the winners at 3.91. The boys’ swimming squad from Woodbridge had a 3.61 GPA; Calvary Chapel’s wrestlers checked in at 3.48, and the GPA of the field hockey team from Santiago was 3.17.

In addition, boy and girl individual student-athletes of the year from participating school will also be honored. Recipients of the individual awards must be seniors who have maintained a minimum 3.5 GPA in college-prep courses for the past three years in addition to earning a letter in at least one varsity sport and participating in an additional extracurricular activity. The eighth annual awards are sponsored by the Angels, the Ford Motor Company and the Murdy Foundation.
