Mike McClintock’s performance was record-setting, Adrian Brown’s was impressive and Mark Algarme’s was inspiring for Golden West Wednesday in the Rustlers’ Orange Empire Conference track and field meet with Riverside and Fullerton.

Riverside, as expected, won the meet with 91 1/2 points to finish 9-0 and win the conference title.

Golden West (48 points) was second and Fullerton (40 1/2) third. By beating Fullerton, Golden West clinched second in conference with an 8-1 record. San Diego Mesa (7-2) was third and Fullerton (6-3) fourth.

Fullerton and Golden West were separated by only a few points throughout the meet but the Rustlers could close it out with a second-place finish in the 1,600 meter relay. Early in the third leg, Golden West’s Algarme started to close on Riverside’s Aaron Webber.

Algarme was a step behind at the 200-meter mark when he suddenly dropped back because of an injury to his left leg. But instead of pulling up, he limped the final 200 meters, finishing a few steps ahead of a Fullerton runner. Golden West’s Cal Daniels pulled away on the final lap to secure second place for Golden West.

McClintock had set a Golden West record this season with a javelin throw of 209 feet. It was also the best mark in the state until Wednesday, when he surpassed it with a throw of 210-3.

Brown had 16 points for Golden West, winning the 110 hurdles (14.2 seconds) and the long jump (22-8 3/4). He was second in the triple jump as well as the 200.

Fullerton’s Jarrod Smith won the triple jump (46-5 1/4), and was second in the long jump.

“It’s been a really good year for us so far,” Golden West Coach Matt Simpson. “We just want to keep it going in the conference finals . . . We have built a really good foundation and I think things will continue to go really well for us.”
