Casey’s Twist on Wisdom of Solomon

In a videotape entitled “Mickey Mantle: The American Dream Comes to Life,” which was recently shown by PBS, the Hall of Fame New York Yankee center fielder talks about the day Manager Casey Stengel called him, Billy Martin and Whitey Ford to his office.

“Casey asked us if we ever heard of King Solomon. Well, Casey went on to say that King Solomon had 100 wives, and when he wanted one of them he would just send for her. There was this one guy who had the job finding the wife King Solomon wanted.

“He told us King Solomon lived to be 100, but the guy who was always going out looking for the wives died at age 30. Casey said: ‘Just goes to show you the partying won’t kill you, but the chasing will.’ ”

Wilt’s legacy: On April 14, the Minnesota Timberwolves took only 62 shots in losing to the SuperSonics at Seattle, 129-95.

When Wilt Chamberlain scored his NBA-record 100 points on March 2, 1962, in Hershey, Pa., he had 63 shots. He also made 28 of 32 from the free-throw line. As a team, Minnesota made only 27 free throws in its defeat by Seattle.
