Tossofthecoin Might Be Sold to the Craigs
Sidney and Jenny Craig are close to buying Tossofthecoin, a colt they will run in the Kentucky Derby if the deal goes through.
Hal King, the Craigs’ racing manager, said negotiations are ongoing and the announcement of the sale could come today, providing a price is struck and Tossofthecoin passes a veterinarian’s examination.
The Craigs, who race Paseana, last year’s champion older filly or mare, started their first horse in the Derby last year and Dr Devious finished seventh.
Tossofthecoin, originally sold for $37,000, races for Frances Jelks and is trained by Tom Bell. They were not planning to run him in the Kentucky Derby, a week from Saturday, after his second-place finish behind Storm Tower in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct last Saturday.
Tossofthecoin, third in the Louisiana Derby on March 20, had run only in California before his last two races. The Magesterial-Bali Babe colt has only one victory in nine starts--against maidens at Hollywood Park last November--but he has finished second five times and earned $204,650.
If the sale goes through, Bell will continue training Tossofthecoin for the Derby.
