Ventura College Forward Curry Signs With Oklahoma

Calvin Curry of Ventura College, the state basketball co-player of the year in 1992-93, has signed a letter-of-intent to play at Oklahoma, Ventura Coach Philip Mathews said Friday.

The 6-foot-6 forward from Compton High led Western State Conference players in scoring with a 21.1-point average and was named WSC North Division player of the year.

Curry helped the Pirates win their seventh consecutive divisional title and averaged 21.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in three games of the state tournament last month. Ventura (37-2) lost the title game to Columbia, 97-88, after being ranked No. 1 in the state throughout the season.

Other Ventura players who have signed to play for four-year schools are Stephane Brown (6-3 guard, Oregon State) and Donyhel Johnson, Reggie Butts, Tavvy Gatlin and Brian Golden (all with Langston, an NAIA school in Oklahoma).

Two other WSC players have signed with to four-year schools.

Amir El-Farra, a 6-4 center from Moorpark College (2.4 points, 3.9 rebounds), has signed with Humboldt State, an NCAA Division II school. Art Wallace, a 6-10 center at Oxnard College who averaged 12.0 points and 8.4 rebounds, has signed with San Francisco, a Division I school.
