Mavericks Beat Timberwolves--and the 76ers
Rookie Jim Jackson scored a career-high 32 points Friday night and the Dallas Mavericks avoided association with the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers as the worst team in NBA history with a 103-100 victory over Minnesota.
The Mavericks gained their 10th victory of the season to get out of a tie with the 76ers. Philadelphia was 9-73 in 1972-73; Dallas is 10-71.
Jackson, the No. 1 pick from Ohio State who did not join the team until March, scored 20 points in the second half as the announced sellout crowd of 17,502 celebrated the team’s escape from NBA infamy. The Mavericks were 4-50 when Jackson signed. They are 6-21 with him.
“It was good to get No. 10 so we won’t have to hear about it anymore,” Jackson said. “The key was to end the season on a positive note, and we did that.”
Minnesota’s Micheal Williams was 11 for 11 from the free-throw line to give him 74 in a row. The record is 78 by Calvin Murphy of Houston.
