GLENDALE : Deer Dies After Chase in Downtown

A chase through downtown Glendale resulted in the capture of a mortally injured mule deer Tuesday.
“The deer was tackled by Lt. Don Meredith and taken into custody,” Glendale Police Sgt. Lief Nicolaisen said.
The deer, which had probably been struck by a car, later died in a truck en route to the Glendale Humane Society, animal control supervisor Joseph Sykora said.
Meredith said Sgt. Ed Desario spotted the young buck near Glendale and Wilson avenues “and tried to corral it. It went all the way down to San Fernando Road and back.”
Officers said their chief concern was the safety of everyone, including the animal.
“It came close to causing a couple of accidents and knocking down a couple of pedestrians,” Meredith said. “We were just trying to get it to a place of safety where we could catch it without endangering anyone else, or using lethal force on it.”
The deer eventually was cornered behind a store in the 900 block of East Colorado Street. After tranquilizer darts fired by animal control officers missed, the deer bolted again.
“He ran between the two animal control officers,” Meredith said. “One got a hand on him and then I jumped him.”
Sykora said the deer had a fairly fresh chest wound and one antler broken off. He theorized that the deer had been struck by a car either Monday night or early Tuesday.
Police said it is not unusual for deer to enter residential areas on the edge of the city, especially at this time of year.
