VALENCIA — A federal grand jury Tuesday indicted an 18-year-old Santa Paula man in an April 7 bank robbery.
Craig James Brashear is accused of using a shotgun to rob a Home Savings of America branch of about $2,000 and fleeing in a car north on the Golden State Freeway, said Charlie Parsons, FBI special agent in charge.
Law enforcement authorities gave chase for more than an hour and a half, covering 80 miles, before the car ran out of gas in Santa Barbara on the U.S. 101 State Street off-ramp.
During the pursuit, the robber threw a white bag of money and a shotgun from the moving vehicle as he passed through Fillmore. Both items were recovered on the highway median.
No one was injured in the robbery or the vehicle chase.
Brashear is being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, FBI Supervisor Gary Auer said.
A hearing is scheduled May 3 in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to set a trial date.
If convicted, Brashear faces up to 25 years in jail and a possible $10,000 fine.
