MISSION VIEJO — A 4-year-old boy walking in the middle of a busy street was struck by a car and killed Tuesday evening, authorities said.
The boy, whose name was not released pending the notification of relatives, was walking on Olympiad Road near Lake Mission Viejo at 6:50 p.m., Sheriff’s Lt. Jay Mendez said.
“According to witnesses, the car was traveling at the 55-m.p.h. speed limit,” Mendez said. “Apparently, the driver did see the child, skidded and tried to stop but was unable to in time.” The driver struck the boy and dragged him 40 feet before being able to stop.
The child was dead on arrival at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.
Mendez said the boy lived near the scene, but he did not immediately know if he was accompanied.
The driver of the car was not cited. The accident remains under investigation, Mendez said.
