Corsair Baseball Coach Berson Says This Season Is His Last

Marty Berson has resigned as Santa Monica College baseball coach after 15 seasons.

Berson, 50, met with President Richard Moore on Tuesday and turned in his resignation. he will remain as coach until the Corsairs’ final game May 8 at pierce College.

Berson has a 296-278 record. The Corsairs are 9-25 and 5-20 in the Western State COnference with five games to play. They lost to Oxnard, 11-3, on Tuesday.

“I feel its’s in the best interest of the baseball team,” Berson said. “I want to concentrate on my teaching load. I want to be the best physical education teacher in the school.”

Berson had seasons with 20 or more wins from 1983-92. He came to Santa Moncia College in the fall of 9187 after coaching five seasons at Savanna High in Anaheim.

Santa Monica does not have an on campus stadium, making recruiting difficult. Berson, however, never used that as an excuse.

“This job is a challenge to take players no one wanted,” he said. “But that’s part of Corsair baseball, not having the players and the field. I think I did a pretty good job winning nearly 300 games in 15 seasons.”
