Jenkins Quits as Houston Coach

From Staff and Wire Reports

John Jenkins, embattled Houston football coach, resigned Friday in the wake of allegations by a former assistant and several former players that his program violated NCAA rules.

Jenkins said the school had agreed on a settlement that will pay him the equivalent of two years’ base salary and continued health care insurance for his family.

He refused to discuss the allegations.

Assistant Steve Staggs, fired by Jenkins last month, has accused Jenkins of paying summer school tuition at a local community college for junior-college recruit Harlan Davis.

Davis said he enrolled at Tennessee instead of Houston when he was warned by one of his former coaches that Jenkins’ program had illegally paid his fees at Houston Community College.
