The Healthy Hipster

There’s not much that tastes like health food at the new hipster coffee shop Swingers. But like the Nature Club, there are fruit- and vegetable-based drinks, here called Smart Drinks. Swingers, from the people who run Olive, looks like a homage to the early ‘70s. The counter is a garish orange, heart-shaped hippie flags are tiled into the walls, the booths are plastic-covered red plaid, and the crowd is mostly the long-haired rock-and-club crowd who need a place to eat breakfast at 2 in the afternoon.

The food is standard coffee-shop cooking, with a few contemporary pasta and grilled chicken dishes. The best thing about the place is that it’s possible to eat a lunch of good and greasy sausage-topped pork chops with an Energy Smart Drink and somehow leave feeling virtuous.
