COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Arizona Beats Titans in 13th Inning

George Arias hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 13th as Arizona beat Cal State Fullerton, 13-12, in a nonconference baseball game Saturday in Tucson.

The Titans (30-14) had scored in the top of the inning before Arizona (30-20) rallied for its fourth consecutive victory.

Fullerton held an 11-6 lead going into the bottom of the eighth, but Jason Thompson hit a grand slam to cut the lead to 11-10. Todd Landry hit a home run in the ninth for the Wildcats to force extra innings.

Dante Powell, Adam Millan, Jim Betzsold and Jeremy Carr had home runs for Fullerton.

Arizona won Friday, 11-9. The teams conclude the three-game series at 1 p.m. today.

In another nonconference baseball game:

Chapman 10, Grand Canyon 8--Visiting Chapman rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to beat Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon scored four times in the sixth to take a 8-5 lead, but the Panthers got one run in the seventh and another in the eighth to cut the deficit to 8-7.

Buster Nietzke had three hits and scored two runs for Chapman (22-24). Chris Briones added three hits, including a homer.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 1-5, Christ College Irvine 3-4--Ted Wieczorek had the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in the second game for host Southern California College (27-21, 10-8).

Barrett Bernard had a three-run double in the fourth of the second game for Christ College Irvine (16-29-2 5-13).

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 1-9, New Mexico State 0-3--Denise DeWalt had three hits, including a home run and a double, in the second game for Cal State Fullerton (30-16, 19-5). DeWalt had four hits and four RBIs for the day.

Marci White added four hits and Rose Garces three for the Titans.

Titan pitcher Tiffany Boyd picked up the victory in both games, improving to 15-9.

In the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:

Chapman 5-6, UC Riverside 0-3--Wendy Clemens had an RBI in the eleventh inning of the second game to lead Chapman (21-21, 6-11). Viki Vechinski won both games for Chapman.

At the UC San Diego Open:

UC Irvine women win 400 relay--The team of Jamie Karrer, Pam Kurtela, Andrea Dean and Lana Banks won the 400-meter relay in a time of 47.18. Kurtela, a graduate of Los Alamitos High School, also finished second in the 200 (24.87) and the 100 (11.8).
