RIGHTS FOR GAYS
In a perfect world there would not be any “national debate over gay rights” (“L.A.’s New Gay Muscle,” by Bettina Boxall, March 28). Our citizens would have brains enough to recognize that gays are human beings with entitlement to all the human rights afforded to anyone else.
A person’s sexual orientation should not, and does not, have any bearing on his or her ability to function as a responsible American citizen. I have known many gay and lesbian humans in my lifetime and have found them to be as noble, flawed, prejudiced and diverse as the rest of the population. It pains me to see the blind hatred directed at them when they dare to be themselves. It saddens me even more when a heterosexual friend whom I love makes sweeping, venomous remarks about gays in general (among whom I count other friends and family members I love).
While I am happy to see gays make political gains and stand up for their human rights, if I had my way, that would not even be necessary.
