Whittier : New Name, New Signs for City Business District

Share

City officials have selected a Newport Beach manufacturer to build the first sign touting the central shopping and business district’s new marketing image. Brandt Commercial Signs will erect the sign, which will read, “Historic Uptown Whittier, Founded in 1887.” The marker, 6 feet high and 12 feet wide, will replace a sign that read “The Village.”

The city had been marketing its rebuilt central district as The Village in recent years, but business leaders said they preferred the “Uptown” designation, which they consider unique and historic.

The new sign, which will be located at the southeast corner of Whittier Boulevard and Philadelphia Street, will cost the city $11,786.

The Whittier Uptown Assn., a group of merchants that lobbied for the change, will spend $20,000 to replace 40 to 45 signs with the new name in the next three years.
