Share

Hundreds of people looking for fun and food turned out Friday for the start of a weekend carnival in North Hollywood Park that will benefit San Fernando Valley charities.

The carnival, held at Magnolia and Tujunga boulevards, is staged jointly by the Starscene Foundation of the North Hollywood/Universal City Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation.

More than a dozen rides, ranging from a Ferris wheel to the Quasar, highlight the carnival, which also features game and food booths. Prices for the rides cost two to three tickets, which are 60 cents each.

Organizers hope to raise at least $15,000, most of which would go to Valley-based charities, and the rest to activities and maintenance at the park, said Jim Mahfet, chamber executive vice president.

The carnival will continue from noon to midnight today and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday. Admission and parking are free.
