Central Library to Reopen

Share

Pfeiffer’s article on the building and books of Central Library was very nice but he forgot an ingredient in the rebuilding of this great facility: the staff. Even an architect should not overlook the many librarians and support staff who had their hearts broken in the fire of 1986 but have remained and struggled mightily to see this rebirth of the Central Library.

As a volunteer I saw firsthand the terrible destruction of the arson crime, but after we left the staff stayed and labored for years in obscurity to save a great collection. Their strength and dedication should be celebrated along with the shiny new building.

Anyone who has ever used Central knows that the staff makes it what it is, not the building. Books and bricks do not a library make but love and dedication by the staff have kept this dream alive.
