HERE COMES SUMMER: Santa Ana winds carried surprise summer-like temperatures into downtown Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley Sunday, sending tens of thousands to the beach for comfort and an early-season tan. . . . For a change, it was a nudge cooler in the Valley than on the other side of the Cahuenga Pass, where the mercury hit 98 degrees, 1 short of the record set in 1923. . . . It was a still-sizzling 97 degrees in Northridge and 93 in Van Nuys Story B1, Weather B2.
