Dena Villasenor
College: Cypress
Sport: Softball
Position: Pitcher
Class: Sophomore
When Villasenor took the mound for Cypress May 3, she had no idea it would be with a chance to help the Chargers win the conference title outright.
Cypress had started play on the final day of conference competition tied with Fullerton, which was playing at Rancho Santiago. Cypress hoped for a co-championship at best.
But Rancho Santiago upset Fullerton, 4-1, and Villasenor (13-4) pitched a four-hit shutout as Cypress won, 4-0, over Riverside. The victory gave the Chargers their third title in four seasons.
Another top performer:
* Shelley Byrd of Saddleback went three for four in her final game to raise her average to .402 for the season.
