SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Royal Breezes Past Highland for 39th Consecutive Victory

Royal High extended its two-year winning streak to 39 matches with a 15-10, 15-4, 15-5 sweep of Highland on Friday in the opening round of the Division II volleyball playoffs at Royal.

Royal (17-0), which hasn’t lost since the final match of the 1991 season, was led by Jason Hughes with 14 kills and Steve Hodge with 12.

Josh White added a match-high 43 kills.

In other first-round matches:

Village Christian d. Bell-Jeff, 15-3, 15-13, 15-5--Greg Walgenbach had 19 kills and Chad Hanson added six kills to propel Village Christian to its 14th consecutive victory in a Division III match.

Steve Shaw had eight digs and four service aces for Village Christian (16-1), which will play Paso Robles in the second round Tuesday at a site to be determined.

In Division I matches involving area teams, Dos Pueblos d. Crespi, 15-10, 15-9, 15-3; Santa Monica d. Crescenta Valley, 15-10, 15-12, 15-8; Arcadia d. Ventura, 15-12, 15-6, 15-9; Alemany d. Brentwood, 10-15, 5-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-9; and Mira Costa d. Buena, 15-9, 15-4, 15-3. In a Division II match, Thousand Oaks d. Montebello, 15-6, 15-7, 15-0.
