NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Bowen Notches Shutout, Earns Nitch in Marlin Record Book

Ryan Bowen pitched the first shutout in club history and the Florida Marlins remained undefeated on Saturdays with a 8-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at St. Louis.

Bowen (3-4) did not give up a hit until Todd Zeile singled with two outs in the fifth. He gave up six hits, struck out three and walked four in pitching his first career shutout.

Florida is 6-0 in Saturday games.

Bowen, who lost his last three games, ran his scoreless-inning streak to 16 and lowered his earned-run average to 2.65.

Joe Magrane (2-4) quickly got himself in trouble in the fifth as he walked the first two batters and hit the third with a pitch. Carr doubled down the third base line to bring in two runs and Rich Reneteria singled in a run.

San Francisco 3, San Diego 0--Trevor Wilson ended his two-season, six-game losing streak with the support of back-to-back home runs by Barry Bonds and Robby Thompson as the Giants won at San Diego.

Wilson (1-3) combined with Dave Righetti and Rod Beck on a four-hitter to claim his first victory since last Aug. 15, a stretch of 11 starts.

Bonds broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning when he connected against Kerry Taylor (0-3) for a two-run homer over the center-field fence, his ninth home run of the season. Thompson followed with his first home run of the year.

Cincinnati 5, Colorado 3--Hot-hitting Kevin Mitchell singled home the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning at Cincinnati to rally the Reds to their sixth consecutive victory.

Mitchell’s two-out, two-run single against Armando Reynoso (2-2) lifted the Reds (18-18) to .500 for the first time since April 7, when they were 1-1.

Gary Varsho, who was sent back to triple-A Indianapolis after the game, led off the seventh with a pinch-double and Bip Roberts was hit by a pitch for the second consecutive at-bat. After outs by Bobby Kelly and Barry Larkin left the runners on second and third, Mitchell came to bat with first base open.

Milt Hill (3-0) got the victory with one inning of relief, and Jeff Reardon pitched the ninth for his sixth save.

Montreal 2, New York 1--Frank Bolick scored the tying run on a squeeze play in the fifth inning and had a sacrifice fly in the sixth, leading the Expos at Montreal.

In the sixth, Moises Alou singled with one out, Marquis Grissom doubled and Larry Walker was intentionally walked, loading the bases against Bret Saberhagen (3-4). Bolick’s fly ball put the Expos ahead.

Chris Nabholz (3-3) gave up four hits and walked five in six innings. Brian Barnes pitched two innings for his third save.

Chicago 14, Pittsburgh 5--The Cubs had 19 hits, including four home runs, as they routed the Pirates at Chicago.

Derrick May had a three-run home run, Sammy Sosa hit a two-run homer and Dwight Smith and Ryne Sandberg had solo homers.

Jose Guzman (4-3) pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits and striking out seven.

Pittsburgh went on top, 1-0, in the first on Andy Van Slyke’s run-scoring triple, but Smith tripled in the bottom of the inning and scored on a run-scoring single by Jose Vizcaino, who has a 16-game hitting streak--the longest in the majors this year. Sandberg’s home run against Tim Wakefield (3-4) made it 2-1.

Atlanta 5, Philadelphia 3--Ron Gant doubled home the tying run with two outs and pinch-hitter Bill Pecota followed with a two-run double, capping an eighth-inning rally that led the Braves past the Phillies at Atlanta.

Greg Maddux (3-3) gave up three runs on six hits in eight innings. Mike Stanton retired Lenny Dysktra on a fly ball with a runner on second base for his major league-leading 15th save.

David West (0-1) relieved to start the eighth and retired the first two batters before giving up a hit to Terry Pendleton, who scored on Dave Hollins’ throwing error.
