Esperanza, 1992 Southern Section Division II runner-up to San Marino, will play Redlands in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Redlands tied Laguna Beach, 9-9, but won on games, 76-74.

The Aztecs (18-5), who finished third in the Empire League, advanced to the second round with a 12-6 wild-card victory over Fullerton and an 11-7 first-round victory over Riverside Poly.

“Maybe it’s pride with them,” Esperanza Coach Jean Agee said. “I call them the ‘Cinderfellas’ because they’re the only third-place wild-card team.”

Esperanza’s Alex Valle paired with Alex Conter, who returned from a back injury that had sidelined him for three months, to win two of three sets.

Senior Mike Burgess (62-7), who is ranked No. 55 in the 18s, swept, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.

With Esperanza leading, 9-6, during the third round, No. 2 Eric Chang overcame No. 3 Britt Shuford of South Torrance in a tiebreaker (7-3) to clinch the match.
