Mike Bellovich, who led Ocean View with a .468 batting average this season and was second in the county with 37 runs batted in, has accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Pepperdine.

Bellovich, who transferred from Edison to Ocean View his junior year, was the Seahawks’ starting catcher for two seasons.

Ocean View (20-8) defeated Mission Viejo, 9-8, in a Southern Section Division I wild-card game Tuesday, and plays at Palos Verdes Peninsula in the first round at 3:15 p.m. today.

John Simmons, a Southern Section swimming champion for El Toro, has been selected to compete in the U.S. Olympic Festival July 24-26 in San Antonio, his club, Irvine Novaquatics, announced.

Simmons, who has signed a letter of intent with Southern Methodist, won the section’s Division I 200 freestyle final in 1 minute 39.97 seconds and finished second in the 100 backstroke last weekend.

Simmons also will compete in the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Assn. meet June 12 in Indianapolis.

Carrie Redfern, an all-Pacific Coast League runner from Laguna Beach, has decided to attend Irvine Valley College next year, according to Irvine Valley cross-country Coach Bill Leach.

Redfern joins a women’s cross-country team that finished second in the state last year and won the title in 1991.

Dave Swingler, an all-Pacific Coast League runner from Laguna Hills, will compete on the men’s cross-country team at Irvine Valley next year.

Jerry Stowell, boys’ soccer coach at Los Alamitos for 15 years, has resigned, Athletic Director Frank Doretti said Thursday. Stowell led the Griffins to the Southern Section 2-A championship in 1992.
