Sometimes when a pitcher’s no-hitter is broken up, everything falls apart. But in that situation Friday, Brunette held his team together and made sure Ocean View beat Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula to advance in the second round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs. After two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Peninsula loaded the bases on an error, the Panthers’ first hit of the game and a batter who reached after striking out on a pitch in the dirt. “He never got rattled throughout that whole thing,” Ocean View Coach Steve Barrett said. “He never blinked an eyelash. He just came back and struck the next kid out.” Brunette finished with eight strikeouts and one walk in the 4-1 victory. Brunette also had two hits and two runs batted in. Tuesday in a wild-card game against Mission Viejo, Brunette earned the save in the 9-8 decision and had two hits and two RBIs.

Other top performers:

* Mission Viejo’s T.J. Brown won the shotput (53-8 1/2) and the discus (160-7) at the Division I track and field championships.

* Katella’s Brian Carlson won the Division II high jump, clearing 7 feet and becoming the second Orange County to jump that height. His older brother Kevin was the first.
