Compassionate Hero or Zealous Terrorist?

Twenty-five years ago, I demonstrated with seven women against the Norwegian seal kill. Nothing changed. The next spring, seals were again flayed alive.

I demonstrated against the leg-hold trap, the brutality of furs and perfume, the unimaginable atrocities committed in the name of science and over and over again to stop the slaughter of throwaway pets in America’s “shelters.”

No one cared. No one listened. Nothing changed. In 1978, frustrated with the human capacity to ignore suffering, I dropped out of the ranks of little old ladies in tennis shoes.

Last month I walked with “accidental hero” Jonathan Paul and a galaxy of people from all over Southern California. Because of compassionate warriors like Paul, things are changing. Maybe the weak and the wild have a chance.
