The Far West region includes California, Oregon, Idaho, Hawaii and Washington. Fifteen players made the team. NAIA All-American selections will be announced this summer.

Hart High pitcher Gary Stephenson has been selected the most valuable player of the Foothill League by a panel of coaches.

Stephenson was 9-4 with an earned-run average of 0.98. Stephenson, a senior right-hander, pitched a no-hitter against Hueneme last week in the first round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Cycling

With a strong finish in the final leg of the event, Shawn Cronkhite of Chatsworth placed 14th overall in the Mike Nields Memorial Stage Race last weekend in Fort Collins, Colo. The event was part of the National Cup Series.

Cronkhite, a member of the Miller Lite Cycling team, finished seventh in the fourth and final stage, a 60-mile hill climb. Teammate John Wordin of West Hills slipped to 40th overall.

The pair, who will be joined by teammate Thurlow Rogers of Van Nuys, will compete Sunday in the Holy Cross Memorial Criterium at 3:30 p.m. at Warner Center in Woodland Hills.

The Holy Cross Criterium, a 50-lap, 45-mile event, is expected to draw one of the strongest fields of any area event this year.

Basketball

Brazilian Leonardo Gorauskas has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at The Master’s next season.

Gorauskas, a 6-foot-10 center from Sao Paulo, is an exchange student at Torrey Pines High in Del Mar.

He averaged 16 points and nine rebounds last season and was an All-Avocado League selection.

“He’s a tough, hard-working big man with a soft shooting touch,” Master’s Coach Mel Hankinson said.
