HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS : Burbank Banks on Doubles Win

Burbank High’s No. 3 doubles team defeated Quartz Hill’s No. 2 team in the final match to give Burbank a victory Thursday in a Southern Section Division III boys’ tennis quarterfinal.

The match ended in a 9-9 tie, but Burbank won, 79-72, on games. Quartz Hill led, 9-8, when Morris Li and Jack Liu of Burbank defeated Rohan Dharma and Jose Guerrero, 6-4. The third-seeded Bulldogs (21-3) will meet Righetti in the semifinal Wednesday.

Burbank’s No. 1 singles player, Doug Young, won all three of his sets, extending his playoff winning streak to 12.

In other matches:

Righetti 9, Calabasas 9 (Righetti advances)--Calabasas fought to tie, but lost the Division III quarterfinal match on games, 84-75.

Nordhoff 10, Santa Ynez 8--Ranger No. 1 singles player Steve Tallakson won all three of his sets, remaining undefeated for the season and leading Nordhoff to a Division IV semifinal victory at Santa Ynez. Tallakson, who has signed to play tennis at Ball State, has lost only 11 games all season.

Nordhoff (21-3) will face St. Joseph in the final Wednesday at a site to be determined.
