Ricky Quiles never really got a square shot at Naty Luna in the main event Thursday night at the Irvine Marriott.

Thanks to a series of round-house punches, Quiles won a unanimous decision by scores of 80-72, 80-72 and 79-73 in the lightweight bout.

Luna spent most of the eight rounds standing sideways and bent over in a defensive crouch. Luna even took to turning his back when Quiles tried to move inside.

Quiles (21-2), of San Diego, was able to work a series of left hooks--around Luna’s gloves--to the head and body to score most of his points.

Luna finally came out of his crouch in the final two minutes of the bout and exchanged punches. But once Quiles tagged him with a short right, he turned away.

Neither fighter was in danger of going down.

The card’s most entertaining bout was a five-round scrap between bantamweights Jesse Miranda of Phoenix and Victor Flores of Lennox.

They were toe-to-toe in every round with Flores seeming to hold the advantage. But Miranda came on and won a split decision, 49-46, 48-47. He lost on the other card, 49-46.

Daniel Dancuta, a talented heavyweight from Anaheim, was supposed to fight in the semi-main event. But the bout was called off when his opponent James Broad of Las Vegas failed his pre-fight neurological test.
