* Today’s pairings (at Cerritos College): Division I: Capistrano Valley (20-0) vs. Huntington Beach (22-0), 7:30 p.m.; Div. II: Simi Valley Royal (20-0) vs. Anaheim Esperanza (20-1), 5 p.m.; Div. III: Whittier Christian (18-0) vs. Bellflower St. John Bosco (18-0), 2:30 p.m.

* Last year’s champions: Division I--Santa Barbara d. Huntington Beach, 15-7, 15-8, 15-10; Div. II--Royal d. Esperanza, 10-15, 15-13, 4-15, 15-11, 15-11; Div. III--Whittier Christian d. Calvary Chapel, 15-10, 11-15, 15-3, 15-13.

* Outlook: In Division I, third-seeded Huntington Beach will try to win a title that eluded it last year. But the task will be difficult against top-seeded Capistrano Valley. Capistrano Valley features a strong attack with middle blocker Eric Seiffert, outside hitter Aaron Garcia and setter Eric McKelvie leading the way. Huntington Beach counters with the middle blocking duo of Chris Swann and Nick Ziegler, outside hitter Shadd Walker and setter Chris Jones. In Division II, top-seeded Royal will put a Southern Section-record 42-match win streak on the line. The Highlanders beat second-seeded Esperanza in a five-game final last year and will bring the section’s tallest and perhaps most balanced team into this year’s championship. Outside hitters Steve Hodge and Jason Hughes are among the standouts. Esperanza relies heavily on middle blocker Paul Nihipali, setter Chris Pitzak and outside hitter Brad Goldston. In Division III, top-seeded Whittier Christian goes after its third consecutive title with a lineup led by last year’s Division III most valuable player, Derek Beard. Second-seeded St. John Bosco, the Del Rey League champion, is also talented and undefeated, but must counter one of the section’s most experienced teams.
