Countdown to Election Day : 2 Days Left in the L.A. Mayoral Campaign

THE DAY IN REVIEW

How the mayoral candidates spent their day:

In the final, frenetic days of the Los Angeles mayoral race, Richard Riordan and Michael Woo on Saturday rallied their troops to get out the vote on Election Day and prepared for tonight’s first live TV debate of the runoff campaign.

Riordan said Woo was waging a gutter campaign by raising questions about Riordan’s stand on abortion and about his old arrest record. Just back from his mother’s funeral in New York, Riordan told the crowd at his Hollywood campaign office: “In some ways, I think, I thank God that she didn’t see what Mr. Woo is doing at the end of this campaign, of lowering himself into the gutter, of making the campaign not one of issues but of sleaze.”

Woo attended a rally at his San Fernando Valley headquarters, then boarded an electric bus plastered with “Woo for Mayor” signs and headed for Universal City. The bus broke down.

AIRWAVES / MAILBOX

How the campaign was waged in the realm of advertising:

Woo aired a new radio ad in the black community featuring his endorsement from Jesse Jackson and a new TV commercial touting his endorsement from the Los Angeles Times. He also sent Latinos a mailer featuring his endorsement from President Clinton and Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina. Riordan sent out a mailer highlighting his endorsement from the Daily News of the San Fernando Valley and former Los Angeles Police Chief Tom Reddin.
