SAN FERNANDO : Luncheon to Honor 4 City Employees

They do many of the behind-the-scenes tasks that keep a city humming: cite illegal vendors, coordinate senior citizen activities, unclog storm drains and screen phone calls.

Four San Fernando city employees who usually take home paychecks for such efforts will be treated Wednesday to a collective pat on the back during the First Annual Recognition Luncheon for outstanding city employees.

“I’m very honored,” said Sarah Magana-Withers, a community preservation officer, who investigates complaints about code violations. “It makes it all worthwhile, all the stress and aggravation.”

The San Fernando Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the annual tradition to recognize city employees, who are nominated by their departments.

“It seemed like a great opportunity for us to thank and honor the city employees and their departments who do so much for the entire community,” said Bruce Cohen, the chamber’s executive vice president.

The other honorees are: Harold Tighe, the city’s public works and operations manager who maintains city facilities such as sewer and storm drains; Celeste Barnard, a Police Department secretary who helps coordinate a Christmas basket program; and Viola Lott, a recreation coordinator who schedules card games, trips and events for 450 senior citizens.

The luncheon will be held at noon at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills. The cost is $11 for chamber members; $13 for non-members.
