SPORTS BRIEFS : 5 Youth Groups Receive Foundation Grants

Grant Winners--Five area youth sports organizations have been awarded grants by the Amateur Athletic Foundation.

The largest went to the Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach, which received $41,358. The Long Beach Poly Junior Athletic Assn., which runs a youth football program, was awarded $5,000, and $4,000 each was given to Downey Youth Football, North Long Beach Pop Warner Assn. and the Long Beach Swim Club.

The award to the Poly Junior Athletic Assn. came from a special $1-million fund set aside for youth activities in areas affected by the 1992 riots.

The AAF, using surplus funds from the 1984 Olympics, has given 55 organizations more than $1 million this year.

Water Polo--The Alamo Cup, an international water polo tournament at various locations in Southern California, continues with three matches today at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.

Greece plays the United States B team at 5:30 p.m. The B team is made up of 19 college players who are competing for 13 spots on the U.S. team that will go to the World University Games.

Russia, composed primarily of players who competed on the Olympic bronze medalist team from the Commonwealth of Independent States, plays Cuba at 6:45 p.m., and the United States A team, which finished fourth in the 1992 Olympics, meets Canada at 8 p.m. The United States is the defending Alamo Cup champion.

The tournament opened in Long Beach on Wednesday with a game between Cuba and Canada. Action moves to El Toro High School in Lake Forest on Friday, Corona del Mar High in Newport Beach on Saturday and the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla on Sunday.
