BURBANK : FAA OKs Funds to Soundproof School
The Federal Aviation Administration has tentatively approved a $500,000 grant for Burbank Airport to complete a soundproofing program at Luther Burbank Middle School, an airport spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The FAA grant, in addition to a $120,000 donation from the airport, will be used to complete the second and final phase of a soundproofing project at the school, which is beneath the widely used southern takeoff route.
The FAA and the airport paid for the first phase of the project by soundproofing 41 classrooms, a library and several administration offices at a cost of $3.1 million, said airport spokeswoman Elly Mixsell.
Mixsell said the airport must file the necessary documents to request the money, which is, in effect, simply a formality toward collecting the funds.
Many airport critics have urged airport officials to soundproof homes exposed to aircraft noise. But airport officials have said they have limited funds and want to soundproof schools before spending money on homes.
