A 5-year-old girl was fatally injured when she was run over Wednesday by a baggage cart at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, police said.

The girl was smashed into one of the station lobby’s massive pillars after her 3-year-old brother somehow managed to get the motorized cart started, police said.

The girl was also with a sister, 4, who suffered a broken ankle in the accident, Lt. Winthrop Taylor said. “The mother was there, too, and she tried to prevent it, but she was unable to stop the cart.

“The little girl was hanging on the rear of the cart and, when it started, it accelerated backward and crushed her against the pillar,” Taylor said.

Fire Department paramedics determined that she had suffered massive internal injuries and rushed her to White Memorial Hospital, where she died.

Police would not immediately release the names of the victims but said the mother had brought her three children from Walnut “to greet their father when he got off work.”
