A 5-year-old girl crushed to death while playing with her younger brother and sister on an electric baggage cart at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles was identified Thursday.
Amber Blancarte was with her 4-year-old sister and 3-year-old brother when the accident occurred Wednesday afternoon at the station at Alameda Street and Sunset Boulevard.
The children “were playing on the cart and one of them managed to get it started,” said Los Angeles Police Lt. Winthrop Taylor of the Central Station. “The girl was hanging off the back of the cart. It accelerated in reverse and crashed into a pillar,” crushing the girl, he said.
The children and their mother had come from Walnut to meet their father at the station. He works in the downtown area, Taylor said.
“The mother saw the cart start moving and tried to stop it, but she just couldn’t get there in time,” Taylor said. The younger girl suffered a broken ankle.
