BURBANK : New Transportation Panel Proposed
A new commission has been proposed to take on municipal transportation issues from light rail to bicycle paths.
The Burbank City Council will consider the proposed Transportation Commission at its Tuesday meeting.
The seven commissioners would be unpaid. To handle a broad slate of issues, members would include small and big business representatives, homeowners, transportation technology organizations, the airport authority and groups such as senior citizens, the disabled and bicyclists.
Transportation issues in Burbank have become more complex as the city competes for both a light-rail line from the Burbank Airport to downtown Los Angeles and a proposed monorail to Universal City.
City officials said the commission would replace the Burbank Transportation Board, which has a more limited agenda.
Mike Caggiano, a board member, did not like the idea of a new membership scheme or the expanded duties.
“I think you’re confining the board to special interests,” Caggiano said.
The five-member Transportation Board, created by the City Council in February, 1987, makes recommendations on spending public transportation money and performs other advisory duties.
