630 Yards Still Within Daly’s Range

Share

John Daly shot a 68 at the U.S. Open on Friday and trailed Lee Janzen by six shots, but it was his performance on the 17th hole at Baltusrol Golf Club that had the crowd buzzing.

Daly did what had never been done, reaching the 630-yard hole in two shots, with a 325-yard drive and a one-iron. He two-putted from 35 feet for a birdie.

No one in six previous Opens here has reached that hole in two shots. Reportedly, no member has reached it, either.

Asked how he got extra distance with his one-iron, Daly said: “I just put the ball back in my stance. I play it like a nine-iron and hit down on it.”
