BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Strawberry Goes on Disabled List

Darryl Strawberry, acknowledging that his surgically repaired back is not healed, went back on the disabled list Friday.

“I’m not helping myself, and I’m not helping the club,” Strawberry said.

His dismal performance at the plate Wednesday in Denver finally persuaded Strawberry to give up trying to come back until he is healed.

“This is not the way I want to walk out of baseball,” Strawberry said. “I am not a half-player. When I come back, I want to be healthy and strong and doing as well as I can.”

When he will play again is anybody’s guess, but Strawberry says it definitely will be more than 15 days.

“I can’t get around it, and I can’t do it any more,” he said. “I’m going to do it the way the other players did it that had this surgery, and they took time off.”

Dave Winfield had the same surgery and sat out a season. Shawon Dunston, who had the surgery last June, still isn’t playing.

Strawberry’s back problems began early last season when it was discovered that a large herniated disk had slipped and was pinching a nerve in his back, causing weak legs and back pain. He had surgery in September and went into spring training believing he was better.

But he has struggled with back stiffness, which is aggravated by his big swing.

He was on the disabled list for three weeks, but hasn’t felt or played much better since his return on June 4. He has made embarrassing plays in the field and has gone three for 22 with one home run. Strawberry has played in 32 of 63 games this season, batting .140 with five home runs and 12 runs batted in.

The Dodgers have submitted a bid to be host of the 1996 All-Star game. Dodger Stadium was the site of the game in 1980.
